Project to Include Cappadocia among the “New 7 Natural Wonders of the World!”
Cappadocia, a natural wonder site decorated by the wind, was voted to be among the “New 7 Natural Wonders” of the World in 2009, and as a result of a campaign initiated and led by A.Refik Kutluer, it passed the first qualifying rounds and advanced to the finals.
However, it could not participate in the final voting as the necessary official support was missing.
A total of 261 national and multinational candidates from 222 countries participated in the campaign. According to the group categories, a total of 77 candidates were determined, 11 of which were in each group.
The expert committee of the project under the Presidency of UNESCO Director-General again determined 21 finalists among these 77 candidates determined according to the votes and was announced to the whole world on 21 July 2009. Finally, in the third and final voting held in 2011, the “7 Wonders”, which shall constitute the “New 7 Natural Wonders of the World”, were determined by popular voting among the 21 finalists.
